How to use a rangoli stencil: clean lines in 10 minutes
Updated October 8, 2026
Stencils make rangoli fast and neat, but a few small habits decide whether the edges come out sharp or blurry.
What you need
- A flat, dry, swept floor
- Rangoli powder, coloured sand, rice flour or chalk powder (fine and dry works best)
- A small spoon or a folded paper cone for sprinkling
- A few coins or small weights for the corners
Step by step
- Place and weigh. Lay the stencil flat and put a coin on each corner. Any gap under the plastic lets powder creep and blurs the edge.
- Sprinkle from low. Hold the spoon a few centimetres above the stencil and fill each opening generously. Too little powder looks patchy; too much is fine, the extra stays on the plastic.
- Tap, don't press. Tap the stencil surface lightly with a fingertip so the powder settles into the openings.
- Lift straight up. Hold two opposite corners and lift vertically in one smooth move. Sliding it sideways drags the powder.
- Tidy. Use a dry brush or the edge of a card to straighten any stray grains.
Two or more colours
Do the first colour, lift, and let it settle. For the second colour, cover the parts you want to keep in the first colour with a strip of paper before sprinkling. Or fill different openings with different colours in one pass using a narrow cone, working from the centre outwards.
Bigger designs
Repeat a 30 cm pattern stencil in a row or a 2 x 2 square for corridors and lobbies. Mark a chalk grid first so each copy lines up.
Cleaning and storing
- Tap the stencil over a bin to drop loose powder, then wipe both sides with a damp cloth. Let it dry fully.
- Store flat between two sheets of newspaper or inside a large book. Don't roll it tight or leave it in direct sun.
- A good plastic stencil lasts for many festivals if it's stored flat.
